01999 Mercury Cougar Test Drive – Generation Gap
After a year’s hibernation from the marketplace, the Mercury Cougar re-emerged as a lean, mean competitor that shared no resemblance to its former self. Gone was the padded vinyl-top sedan image of a Cougar in favor of a sleek coupe with “new-edge” styling. Gone were the older buyers, too. Now the focus was on young buyers with offerings of “fun, flair, and flexibility.”
The Cougar came only as a coupe. Even though it didn’t look the part, it was a hatchback, complete with fold-down rear seats. The standard spolie was a delete option. The 1999 Cougar benefited from using much of the Contour/Mystique platform and powertrain. Two engines were available, a 2.0-liter 125-hp version and a 2.5-liter V-6 rated at 170-hp. Either engine could be mated with a 5-speed manual, or 4-speed automatic transmission.
