01999 Subaru Legacy SUS Test Drive
Subaru was out to broaden the popular view of what a sport utility vehicle was. The Legacy Outback forged off in a new direction, sparking phenomenal sales growth for Subaru. They were at it again with the Legacy Sport Utility Sedan, which went on sale in early 1998 as a 1999 model. Equipped for recreational off-road use (along with the on-road refinement expected of a sedan), the Legacy SUV was the embodiment of Subaru go-anywhere thinking. During 1999, the SUV (and Outback and other up-level versions of the LEgacy) got a new 2.5-liter165-horsepower SOHC opposed-four with better power characteristics. Both manual and automatic transmissions were also more refined.
