01999 Toyota Solara Test Drive
Since the Toyota Camry was the best selling car in America in 1998, Toyota was not looking to mess with success, but to build on it. The Camry Solara, a two-door coupe based on the Camry, looked distinctive but retained the familiar moniker.
The Solara was built in Canada in Cambridge, Ontario on the same assembly line as the Corolla, in a ratio of 1 Solara per 10 Corollas. Most of the target customers for this new model were between 40 and 49 years of age. These were couples with grown up children who no longer lived at home and were at the pre-retirement stage or already retired and busy starting a new life.
