01999 Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo Test Drive
As lovable as a Beanie Baby and if VW had its way every bit as ubiquitous, the New Beetle was the automotive sensation to close out the century. So adorable it could get by on looks alone, it also happened to be a competitively good car. With a strong balance between road compliance and handling spiced with particularly fun steering response, the Beetle felt like a German road car, even though it looked like a ‘ToonTown escapee. Initially, the sole powerplant had been a 2.0-liter/115-horsepower inline-four. The news for 1999 was an optional 1.8-liter/150-horsepower turbocharged engine that came with leather, sunroof, alloy wheels, and a spoiler. A 90-horsepower turbo diesel was also offered.
