Nissan needed a hit in the U.S. market and SUV’s were hot. Without the capital to develop a new car-based SUV, like a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4, the company developed one the way nearly all SUV’s were once built: Based on its pickup truck. The result was a vehicle that heavily overlapped its own Pathfinder in terms of the available V-6 and even most interior and exterior dimensions. However, by doing this as a budget project, the company said it would keep the price quite low, between $18-20,000. In the days of escalating SUV prices, that set a new precedent for those who wanted a traditional-type SUV.
