02000 Nissan Xterra Test Drive
Based on the mechanical of Nissan’s Frontier pickup truck, calling Xterra an all-new truck was a bit of a stretch. But it did carve itself a tidy niche. And with its combination of performance and comfort, it was a good niche. Priced between $18,000 and $24,000, the Xterra offered the on-road comfort and price point of car-based SUVs, like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. But it was larger and had a full frame, an optional V6 and plenty of off-road capability like the Toyota 4Runner, Isuzu Rodeo and Mitsubishi Montero Sport.
On the road the Xterra’s ride went beyond what was previously accomplished with rear leaf springs, and its plasticky but useful interior was perfect for this type of vehicle. Plus, it seated four very comfortably and, with the rear seats folded, easily swallowed two mountain bikes.
