The car that blurred the line between the sport/utility and passenger-car world, the Subaru Legacy, had been completely redesigned for 2000. A new grille and headlights featured tougher-looking styling that carried through the new hood, and delivered superior aerodynamic performance. Subaru marketed the Outback version of the Legacy as a sport/utility sedan and wagon, giving it added ground clearance over the standard car. Equipped with full-time all-wheel drive, both the Legacy and Outback shared the same pleasantly adequate 205-liter/165-horsepower flat-four engine that replaced 1999’s 2.2-liter/137-horsepower version as standard.
