You need to be wearing a leather jacket over a turtleneck as you slide onto the dark, charcoal leather driver’s seat of the Ford Bullitt Mustang-even if your local weather is nothing like the constant fog of San Francisco. Driving a car bearing this name requires you to look the part.
Bullitt-edition Mustangs were available in coupe form only. Exterior highlights included 17-in American Racing Torq Thrust D-style wheels, covered side scoops, restyled C-pillars and rocker panels, and a competition style gas filler door. The look was further enhanced by a slightly lowered ride height.
The concept’s 60s Mustang-inspired interior theme also made it to production with special gauge faces; black leather steering wheel, seat and door panel trim; and aluminum shift knob, console trim and pedal covers.
best news: it was not just for show. Power upgrades centered on a high-performance intake tract, including a new intake manifold, 57mm throttle body, port matched heads, and smoother induction plumbing. The SVT Cobra donated its alternator and windage tray, and the powertrain was finished off by a high-flow exhaust system with special tailpipes. Power was up 5, to 265-horses.
Ford built only 5582 Bullitt Mustangs, each with a special ID number. Translation: It’s a collectible.
