02001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder Test Drive
A modern Convertible must have a rigid body, quiet interior and an easy-to-use top. Mitsubishi won all the battles with its new Eclipse Spyder. The car had a rigid chassis that eliminated all traces of cowl shake and body shudder. the soft-top had a class backlite, and double ply construction that helped keep the interior quiet. Mitsubishi engineers created a reinforced lower body with such devices as a rolled steel bar that ran across the cowl and connected the A-pillar at their base, with a minimal increase in weight over the coupe. Two series were offered, the GS and the GT. Among the GT only options were front-seat side airbags. Base drivetrain for the GS was a 2.4-liter inline four that developed a wanting 147-hp. Optional on the GS was a 3.0-liter 200-hp V6, the better choice.
