In benchmarking BMW as its closest competitor, Jaguar knew it would need a compact sport sedan to go up against BMW’s 3-series. Loosely based on the European market Ford Mondeo, the X-type sport sedan was offered with a choice of two engines: a 2.5L 194hp V6 and a 3.0L 231hp V6. Power was delivered through an all wheel drive system and either a five speed manual or five speed automatic. AWD and lots of wood and leather were standard. An optional Sport package available for both models put a sharper edge on the responsive handling and added exclusive trim features to the X-Type.
