02002 Jeep Liberty Road Test
Stepping into some big shoes, the 2002 Liberty replaced the vehicle that started the compact SUV stampede 18 years prior, the Jeep Cherokee. Two models were offered: an entry level Sport powered by a 2.4 liter 150hp DOHC I4 and a well equipped Limited Edition sporting an all new 3.7 liter 210 hp SOHC V6. Both were available in 2WD or 4WD layouts. For the first time in Jeep’s history, the Liberty featured independent front suspension for improved on-pavement dynamics. The short-coupled high roof styling may have said “cute-ute”, but the Liberty’s stout construction and 4WD systems gave away nothing to the competition.
