Slab-sided as the factory it was built in (handcrafted in Graz, Austria), this mountain goat of a Mercedes was all steak, no sizzle. The purpose built G-class was a favorite workhorse of the military in the European Alps. Its extremely robust underpinnings were bolstered by three locking differentials and four wheel traction control for exceptional off roadability. Previously imported by permission in limited numbers as the $130k Gelaendewagen, the factory’s own civilian G500 coddled with full leather interior and burled walnut trim – and a more palatable pricetag.
