Mitsubishi’s all-new Lancer sedan was larger in almost every dimension than the car it replaced. The only power choice was a 2.0L/120-hp four-cylinder that mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. The Lancer claimed the most front and rear legroom in its class. A preferred equipment package for the LS offered ABS and dual front side-impact airbags. The O-Z Rally model had an appearance package that linked the Lancer to its rally-bred cousin, winner of four world rally championships and the 2001 Pikes Peak hillclimb. No 280-plus-hp AWD Evolution VII model for the U.S. initially, but wait a year or so.
