Following many of the paths scouted by the completely redesigned 2002 Explorer, Ford was primed to release the 2003 Expedition, and you recognized the family resemblance. Although packaged within the same size and weight of the previous Expedition, major improvements included a 70% stiffer chassis, an all new four wheel independent suspension, a power assisted fold flat third row seat, and more powerful, more fuel efficient engine choices: both the Triton 5.4L and 4.6L V8s had new blocks, with the latter now all aluminum. Another key component was an improved safety package, with standard tire pressure monitors at each wheel, available full front and rear curtain rollover airbags, 13-in. four wheel vented disc brakes, and the Advance Trac stability/traction management system. A new Control Trac transfer case allowed for 2WD,AWD, 4WD high and low range. Other upgrades included an in dash message center, increased towing capacity, and a new heavy duty load leveling and adjustable air suspension system.
