Mitsubishi busted a new market segment with the Outlander, an entry level SUV based on the Lancer subcompact chassis. It had trucklike looks, with full time AWD or FWD, plus the versatility of the Outlanders packaging. The Outlander had fully independent suspension, and its standard 140 hp four cylinder engine came with a four sped automatic transmission. AWD models featured a viscous center differential for a 50/50 torque split between front and rear.
