The swoopy Ion compact sedan and quad coupe replaced Saturn’s venerable S-series for 2003. The duo were taller and longer, while upholding he heritage of space frame construction with polymer side body panels. Motivating all Ions was a new 137hp Ecotec DOHC I-4 mated to a five speed manual gearbox. A five speed automatic and new CVT were optional. Other innovations included a center mounted instrument cluster and dual rear access doors on the quad coupe. Saturn supposedly offered “personal Accent” accessories including roof rails color coordinated with interior trim kits.
