The Passat hit the ground running for 2003 with the celebrated W8 engine, two narrow angle VR4 engines grafted onto the same crankshaft. The 270hp engine made the Passat the first eight cylinder car in its class. A five speed automatic and all wheel drive were standard on the Passat W8, available as sedan or wagon. Sport suspension was a new W8 option, while a six speed manual was to come later.
