The Subaru Baja took the “oddball” label and wore it proudly. Carved from the rib of the Subaru Outback, the Baja joined seating for five with a petite pickup bed, albeit expandable with a pivoting bed extender and a switchback pass-through in the rear bulk-head. New for 2003, the Baja gained the lower-priced Baja Sport i, with simpler headlamps and without the Baja’s leather seats. For 2004, Subaru added a cleverly named Baja Turbo. Powered by a 210-horsepower turbocharged flat-four, it was easily spotted by its functional hood scoop. For 2004, all Bajas were raised for 8.5-inches of round clearance.
