2004 Volkswagen Golf R32 Test Drive

The big news for fans of the GTI was availability of the ultimate GTI, known as the R32, early in 2004. It was an aggressive version with the 4Motion All-Wheel-Drive system, six-speed manual gearbox, a fully independent multilink rear suspension, 18-inch wheels, and a 3.2-liter/237-horsepower VR6 engine. It got special R32 badging with different bodywork and interior treatments to set it apart form the regular GTI. Elsewhere in VW’s popular line of hatchbacks were new wheels for the GTI and optional OnStar communication across the line. An updated turbo-diesel engine had 10 more horsepower with improved torque.
