Anyone thinking Volvo sedans were boxes for granola-crunchers hadn’t seen the coupe-styled S60. Yes, the safety-cage, side impact system, and whiplash protection seats were still there. But five versions of the S60 extended from the tame but sane 165-horse S60 2.4 through the 2.5T and 2.5T AWD (both with the 2.5-liter/208-horsepower turbo engine, the latter with AWD) to the T5, snapping out 247 horsepower. The S60R, a mid-2003 addition, flew with 300-horsepower, standard all-wheel-drive, and a choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic. Crunchy yes, but sexy, too.
