After an absence of a year, Kia’s popular compact SUV returned as an all-new vehicle. No longer a body-on-frame model, the new Sportage shared its unibody structure, but not its looks, with the Hyundai Tucson. It was available in front-drive and variable-torque all-wheel-drive configurations, both with a four-cylinder or optional V-6 engine coupled to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. The interior was substantially upgraded and included six airbags. If recent models from Kia were any indication, the new Sportage proved worthy of consideration alongside the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
