All new for 2005, the Dakota was still the biggest truck in the midsize-pickup field and came with an optional V-8. Both extended- and crew-cab versions were available in rear- and four-wheel drive, and trim levels included the workman’s ST, the midrange SLT, and the posth Laramie. Four new models for specialized tastes were offered for 2006, including the TRX, TRX4 Off-Road, performance oriented R/T, and the limited-edition black-trimmed Night Runner. A six-speed manual transmission was standard, with a four-speed automatic offered with the V-6 and five-speed with the V-8. It was one tough midsize.
