Was Mercedes Benz planning to shake up the booming ‘Hot Hatch’ market established by the VW Golf/Rabbit? Well they were at least toying with it, as early as 1981, when Mercedes actually built a test mule, a mini car with an almost vertical tailgate and much shorter wheelbase than the 190 sedan it was based on.
