A name change was in effect for the old Fairmont series, which became Futura for 1982, with a 2-door coupe, and 2- and 4-door sedans. Standard powertrain was the 2.3 liter 4-cylinder engine with 4-speed overdrive manual. The 3.3 liter inline six and 4.2 (255cid) V8 were optional, as was the SelectShift 3-speed automatic. All cars came up to Futura trim levels from 1981, with new trunk configurations for more storage. Options included a 20-gallon fuel tank, dual lighted visor mirrors, and an expanded luxury trim group. Station Wagons were discontinued.
