The 2002 New York International Auto Show, which kicked off for the public in April, featured the usual array of nutty concepts, clearly viable new models and some head scratchers. There was a lot of hype as well and, quite honestly, a lot of brow mopping, too, as automakers patted themselves on the back for selling so many cars in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. Many, it seemed, felt that the worst was behind the industry, at least in the near term.
