The great American car. The great big American car. Six years old by 83′, the Chevrolet Caprice still managed to woo buyers with an undeniable combination of room, ride, comfort, safety, and better fuel economy than one might expect. Marginal horsepower and torque kept the lockup torque converter working overtime on any fast highway trip, but even this unfortunate characteristic was somewhat muted, downplayed in the Chevrolet. It’s not difficult to see why the good citizens of a more conservative America would drift toward this car (and others like it) as fuel prices came down and fuel shortages became gasoline gluts. At $9277, there was hard-to-beat value here. The car was admirably smooth and silent, and as some pundit or another pointed out, it does enable the entire family to go to church in the same car.
