2003 Lincoln Aviator Test Drive

That toothy chrome grille looked good on Lincoln’s new midsize Aviator. Large, square tail-lamps and bold fender lines fit the styling of this new Ford Explorer based SUV better than they fit the Navigator. The Aviator joined the Mountaineer and the Navigator  in Lincoln Mercury showrooms late summer 2002, with the Explorer/Mountaineer’s five speed automatic transmission and four wheel independent suspension intact. The Aviator’s sole eninge was a twin cam DOHC version of the aluminum block 4.6 V8. The interior advanced Lincoln’s new design theme, with a three section dash that mimicked the Navigator.  It featured a center secion trimmed in brushed aluminum down to the gear shift and console, and its surrounded by rich wood, leather and vinyl.  Lincoln interiors of this era were designed to be modern interpretations of classic Continental interiors from the 60’s. It was an appealing package, one that probably had Cadillac designers working had to adapt the Art & Science style to the lame duck Bravada.  Could you imagine?
