Built by Italy’s renowned Pininfarina on a shortened Eldorado chassis, the new two-seat 1987 Allanté was Cadillacs answer to the high-dollar Mercedes SL convertible.  A fortified 4.1-liter V-8 sent 170 horses to the front wheels through a four-speed transaxle.  Rich appointments, two tops, and power everything were included for $54,700, but sales would never really get going as Cadillac had hoped.  The 1987 tally, for example, was a mere 3363.1987-cadillac-allante-promo2

Allanté wore Pininfarina badges, but was largely GM’s own styling job, and quite nice, if Cadillac-style conservative. Recalling the Sixties, taillamps hid behind white lenses by day and glowed red by night or when the brakes were applied.  The trunklid emblem doubled as a CHMSL, per government decree, thus looking much better that the tacked on affairs of many other 1987 cars.
