1981: The Car BMW Incubated But Never Hatched.
BMW wanted to enter the front-wheel-drive arena in the 1984 time frame with this small hatchback, code named 313. The engine sized reportedly ranged from 1.3 to 1.7 liters, and there was some speculation that the engines would be purchased from Steyr, the Austrian firm that would build diesel engines for larger BMW’s in the future. The 313 would have been considerably smaller and lighter than the contemporary 320 and possessed better aerodynamics, according to insiders. In addition to this 3-door hatchback, a notchback version and a four door were also under consideration.
