After the Ram pickup’s considerable success at reestablishing Dodge as a formidable player in the full-size-truck field, Dodge engineers turned their talents loose on the midsize Dakota. With an unmistakable Ram family resemblance, the 1997 Dakota was far more striking than its slab-sided predecessor. The Same inline-four, V-6, and V-8 power plants returned, but the new Dakota had a modern dual-airbag interior that was roomier than anything you would have found in a compact pickup. It also beat those compacts in tow capacity, payload, and cargo-box size. With compact-competitive pricing, coupled with near-full-size capability, the Dakota was a standout value.
