101987 Mazda 929 Test Drive
Before ‘Zoom Zoom’, Mazda offered a Buick. Although the reviewers summed up by comparing it to Mercedes and a Pontiac. With features like avail ABS, telescoping steering wheel, preset EQ settings, and the always ritzy plastic dash plugs, this large rear driver was right on target with competing brands like Acura. One question I have is did it have Mazda’s unique oscillating vents? Luxury or not, having offered the 929 in the Japanese market with a turbo rotary power plant sounds downright intriguing, but the performance provided by the more traditional V6 proved more than adequate.
I think these did have the “Swing” osicilating vent.
if you look when they eye in on the climate system, the lone button on the far right is for the “swing” vents
Thanks Freddy! I figured it did, just wondered wy it was not mentioned in the review!
The 929 was always pretty cool, especially the second gen!
I actually find the second generation sexy.
For sure, and an excellent dash layout IMO. I wish they had brought the ’86 era 929 coupe over here, w/ the quad hidden headlights. Really cool shit.
The dash design reminds me of the first gen Chrysler LHS, or vice versa! Ha
Yeah, and it looks like the steering wheel found its way into the first gen Stratus lol
This car hits a lot of buttons for me, as do all of the cars in its class at the time i.e Acura Legend, Toyota Cressida, Nissan Maxima etc… They were comfortable, well engineered cars with classy conservative styling. I wish we had more like them today.
