01995 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG Test Drive
A new, high-performance Mercedes-Benz sedan roared out of the Black Forest and onto America’s highways in the first quarter of 1995. Modified by the legendary AMG tuning firm, the C36 sport sedan brought supercar wallop to the nimble C-Class platform. Powered by a 3.6-liter/268-horsepower DOHC inline-six and S-Class-derived four-speed automatic, the nasty-boy C36 rode on a lowered suspension with AMG springs, 17-inch wheels, and front disc brakes from the V-12 S600. AMG-specific bodywork and instruments were among the upgrades. The rest of the C-Class line was unchanged, leaving the C220 and C280 to serve conventional luxury tastes at an affordable price.
