11987 Saab 9000S Test Drive
With the recent turmoil, that will potentially lead to Saabs demise, it’s difficult to imagine the automobile industry without this quirky niche brand. Introduced as a 1984 model, as Saab’s foray into the upmarket mid-size segment. Saab designed the 9000 as part of the Type Four platform in conjunction with the Italian automaker Fiat Automobiles. Fiat retailed similar derivative versions as the more basic Fiat Croma, the luxury-themed Lancia Thema, and the sports-oriented Alfa Romeo 164. The 9000′s body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Saab designer Björn Envall. Not as quick as the Aero model the 9000S was reasonably adequate in its track times, in line with many family sedans. Without a spoiler is one way to tell a non Turbo model from a top trim unit. I always found the 9000 to be attractive, particularly in top guise, with a unique look, presumable a primary rationale from the brands faithful. The 9000 left us after 13 years in production, replaced by the 9-5.
Good car, but I rarely see a Saab 9000 on the road!!
