1987 Dodge Dakota Test Drive
If you were in the market for a truck in the late 1980s, and you felt the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10 models were just too small, but didn’t want to go into a conventional full-size pickup, Dodge’s mid-size Dakota may have filled the bill. Driver and two passengers fit comfortably in the roomy cab. Ride and handling were among the best in class (because the class contained one entrant), thanks to coil-spring front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and Dakota’s full frame (separated from the cab by half a dozen rubber isolators). The new 3.9-liter V-6, derived from Chrysler’s small-block V-8, was offered exclusively in the Dakota.
