01997 Toyota Camry Test Drive
With sales on an upswing, the familiar Camry continued to rank as one of the top family sedans in its class; the brand new 1997 models promised to advance the state of the art further still. Riding on a two-inch-longer platform, the Camry was bigger on the inside, slipperier on the outside, and more powerful under the hood. The Camry’s already excellent NVH characteristics were improved, and a lower cowl and total interior rework heightened the feeling of interior spaciousness. The base engine was a 2.2-liter/133-horse inline-four evolution of the previous year’s motor, and the optional 3.0-liter/194-horse V-6 gained six horsepower. The coupe and wagon were discontinued.
