Just when you thought it was safe to declare a winner in the minivan sweepstakes and cite a winner from the slew of contenders in the then prosperous small van market, along came Nissan with its first model labeled a 1990. Driving the Axxess made you feel as if the year was 2001, and you just returned from orbit.
The Axxess would shuttle seven people around in great style, even though, compared to the competition, it was a slightly scaled-down minivan. Its smaller dimensions contributed to its agility. A total of 138-hp was available from the 2.4-liter four and aero was 0.36 Cd. Its cowcatcher nose was reminiscent of Renouglt’s Espace, a minivan that never came here from France.
The front-wheel-drive Axxess was also available with a 4wd drivetrain and transmission choice was 5-speed manual or automatic.
Anyone trying to decide between a family sedan and one of the larger minivans would find the Axxess a very appealing choice. And it puts only 1 gallon of burned fossil fuel into the atmosphere every 27 miles.
