Entering its third year in production, Toyota’s fun RAV4 returned for 1998 with a restyled grille, fascia, lighting, wheels, and other detail changes. Spun from a passenger-car platform, the RAV4 was available in front-drive or full-time four-wheel-drive layouts, and could be outfitted for pure street use or with enough off-road capability for light duty exploring. Two-door (four passenger) and four-door (five-passenger) body styles were available; with the rear seat back folded down, there was 35 cubic feet of storage space in the two-door and nearly double that in the four-door. The RAV4’s engine was a 2.0-liter/120-horsepower inline four that came standard with a manual transmission; automatic was optional.
