01999 Chevrolet Silverado Test Drive
Chevrolet’s new pickup was so different, it earned a model name of its very own, Silverado, and was no longer considered part of the C/K pickup family. A stronger, stiffer, lighter modular frame wore new body panels and featured a new, roomier interior. Available in 1500 (1/2-ton) and 2500 series (3/4-ton), the Silverado could be had with a regular or extended three-door cab, either of two cargo boxes, in two trim levels. The 4.3-liter/200-horsepower V-6 base engine was a C/K series carryover. Three new Vortec V-8 engines boosted peak power (255,270, and 300 horsepower) and torque characteristics. The Silverado’s new turbodiesel now churned out 215 horsepower.
