01998 Toyota Corolla Test Drive
It was bigger, lighter, faster, and more fuel-efficient; it offered improved ride, handling, quiet and safety. But probably the most impressive thing was that all this was offered at a lower price. Three trim levels were offered, the low-buck VE (even the radio was optional on this loss-leader), mid grade CE, and more heavily equipped LE. All shared the same newly re-engineered 1.8-liter/120-horsepower inline four that held a 15-horse advantage over its predecessor. Built in California on the same assembly line as its mechanical twin, the Chevy Prizm, the Corolla offered Japanese engineering coupled with made-in-America virtue.
