01997 Hyunda Tiburon Test Drive
Inspired by Hyundai’s daring HCD-II show car, the new Tiburon sport coupe went on sale in early 1997. Based on the Elantra platform, the Tiburon (it means shark in Spanish) had a similar look and feel to cars such as the Toyota Celica, Mitsubishi Eclipse, and Ford Probe, but torpedoed them all in price. The Tiburon’s independent suspension was tuned by Porche to ensure that the car lived up to its looks. Two engines were in the hopper, a 1.8-liter four that churned out 130 horsepower, and a 2.0-liter four that boosted that figure by another 10 ponies. With the standard five-speed manual transmission, Hyuundai claimed the big engine would get you to 60 mph in about 8.5 seconds.
