02001 Mitsubishi Montero Test Drive
Mitsubishi designed the new for 2001 Montero to be more competitive, more luxurious, more technologically up-to-date and more of everything that its predecessor might have lacked in the high-end, smaller-SUV market. The new Montero felt faster, smoother, quieter and more comfortable than before.
The XLS and Limited trim levels were offered. The XLS was loaded with the most popular features, more than may have been expected with its $30,000 price tag. If you wanted high-level touring, the Limited came with additional creature comforts, such as wood trim, leather upholstery, power sunroof and heated seats and mirrors.
Mitsubishi’s time-tested, 3.5-liter V-6 engine powered the Montero. For 2001 its horsepower did not change, but its torque increased through the use of cold-air induction and larger diameter exhaust pipes. noise levels were reduced through liquid-filled engine mounts and a lower-rpm cooling fan.
