After considerable success with its Outback series of passenger cars that traded on near-SUV attributes, Subaru went further still with the Forester. Based on the Impreza passenger-car platform, the Forester’s sheet metal had an unmistakable SUV flavor. Full-time all-wheel drive backed up the look with all-surface traction that required no button pushing or driver intervention. with no low range, however, Rubicon-style rock hopping was out of the question. Power was supplied by a 2.5-liter/165-horsepower horizontally opposed four, coupled with a manual or automatic transmission. Relative to most truck-based SUVs the Forester had a lower profile, which aided stability and eased passenger entry.
