1998 Hyundai Sonata Test Drive
Designed to compete with cars like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and about a zillion other midsize sedans, the Sonata’s principal weapon wasn’t an engineering feature, it was a number. match equipment with the other guys, and the Sonata came through with a much more appealing price tag. There weren’t many changes for 1998: it remained a practical, solid-feeling sedan with a dash of styling flari. The Sonata got underway with a 2.0-liter/137-horsepower inline four. The recommended upgrade was to a 3.0-liter/142-horsepower V-6 that generated more torque and cut commotion. Inside the Sonata, you’d find an unusually roomy interior and plenty of the amenities you’d expect in this class of car.
