02001 Ford Ranger Edge Test Drive
For 2001, Ford freshened the Ranger’s exterior with a new grille and new taillights. A new hood had a coil induction-like “power dome” that added some machismo to the look. To back up that look, the Ranger gained the Explorer’s 4.0-liter SOHC V6 as well as the truck’s five-speed automatic. In the Ranger, the new six made 207 hp, up 47 from the previous 4.0-liter. To accommodate the new engine, the front suspension geometry was modified.
Also for 2001, Ford had a new monochromatic minitruck called the Edge. but instead of being the premium model in the lineup, the Edge was a value leader priced right between the base XL, and the top dog XLT. With a standard 3.0-liter V6, a durable hose-it-out interior and a 4×4 ride height on two-wheel-drive versions, it had those all important “active-lifestylers” drooling at the dealerships.
