02002 Dodge Durango R/T Test Drive
Dodge’s sole entry in the hot SUV segment covered a lot of ground, from a new value-priced SXT variant to well-equipped SLT, uplevel SLT Plus, and performance-tuned R/T models. It was the first of the midsize SUVs to feature three-row seating. Not quite a full-size but way larger than a compact, the Durango incorporated “Son-of-Ram ” styling with dropped fenders and a cross-hair grille. It backed up the tough look with an all-V-8 engine lineup, affording it class-leading towing ability. Key options included four-wheel discs with ABS, inflatable side-curtain airbags, rear-seat DVD-based entertainment system, and a new five-speed automatic transmission.
