01985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais Coupe Test Drive
The new model proliferation trend seemed to be without end and GM was keeping pace with the rest of the world’s carmakers.
The newest Olds , the Calais Coupe, would be the division’s only fresh entry for the 1985 model year. Built off General Motors N-body, described as a personal luxury coupe that was loosely based on the J-car platform but stretched some 2.5 inches in front, the Calais featured the ubiquitous Pontiac “Iron Duke” 2.5-liter four cylinder as the base power plant. A port-injected 90 degree V-6 would be the only optional engine. The guys at Oldsmobile said they were aiming the Calais at the younger, import-minded buyer. For 1986, the N-car cousins would be extended to a 4-door sedan that GM hoped would go head to head with the BMW 5-series and Audi 5000. Goals.
