The Chevrolet Pickup, GM’s best selling vehicle, and identical GMC Sierra were redesigned and introduced as early 1988 models. A new 6-passenger model was added for 1989 in both 2- and 4-wheel drive configurations, a new sport graphic option package was available for 4WD models (featuring huge “4X4” decals), and new sport exterior packages would be available later in the year.
Base prices were slightly higher on the GMC models, but option prices were the same. Both versions were available in three series: 1500 (1/2 ton), 2500 (3/4 ton), and 3500 (1-ton). A “C” before the series number denoted 2-wheel-drive and a “K” denoted 4-wheel-drive. Models without flared rear fenders were called Fleetside by CHevy and Wideside by GMC. Both Chevy and GMC call their models with the flared rear fenders Sportside, which came only as a shortbed.
In addition to the new pickups, heavy-duty “Crew Cab” version of the old Chevy/GMC trucks were still available. These were 4-door, 6-passenger models with an 8-foot cargo bed.
