The S10 Blazer/S15 Jimmy twins were identical compact sport-utility vehicles except for models and trim designations, and GMC’s slightly higher base prices.  Anti-Lock rear brakes were standard for 1989 on the S10 Blazer and S15 Jimmy, whose combined sales were the highest among compact sport-utility vehicles.  The anti-lock system was designed to prevent the rear wheels from locking before the vehicles stopped, thereby preventing skids.  It worked only when the vehicle was operating in rear-wheel drive.  A new electronic speedometer generated the speed signal for the ABS.

Other changes for 1989 was that power steering, formerly optional on 2-wheel drive models, was now standard, and a rear wiper/washer and an electronic instrument cluster were added as options.
