01986 Mercury Sable Test Drive
The Sable replaced the smaller Marquis in Mercury’s 1986 line, but sold far better by attracting nearly 96,000 buyers. Developed with Ford’s Taurus in a $2 billion program, the new front drive middleweight Merc offered similarly smooth, low-drag styling, plus a standard 3.0 V-6 (2.5 liter I4 on the base GS sedan) and other extras for only a few dollars more. The uplevel LS station wagon priced from $13,068. Mercury as a whole sold 315,147 vehicles for the 1987 model year. 9th place overall.
