1981 General Motors Aero-X Concept Car
Star of GM’s Technical Center’s 25th anniversary celebration was the super slick aerodynamic concept car called Aero-X.
Based on the contemporary X-car, the four-passenger, front-wheel-drive Aero-X was carefully massaged in the Tech Center wind tunnel to a remarkable drag coefficient of 0.285 Cd. That compared to a Cd of about 0.45 for a typical X-car.
The full-scale fiberglass model Aero-X featured a gently sloping curved hoodline with retractable headlamps and under the nose air inlets for engine cooling. Flush glass was used all around, the windshield was severely raked, wipers were recessed, and there were no exterior badges or moldings. The fastback rear window blended into a high, blunt rear deck, and the flush wheel covers and tires lined up exactly with the body sides for smooth, turbulence-free air-flow.
